A world of words

Between them, the EU’s half a billion citizens, in 27 Member States, speak 23 official languages, not to mention all the regional and minority languages. German is the most widely spoken as a first language, with about 90million native speakers. It is followed by English, French and Italian.

With all this linguistic diversity both within Europe and across the world, there are many advantages associated with learning and knowing a foreign language. It can help people make friends, enjoy their foreign holidays and travel more easily, advance in their careers or indulge in the pleasures of other cultures. Learning a language can also help broaden people’s horizons.

Introduction

The programme immerses you in developing practical techniques, methods, and materials for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), such as virtual exchange, storytelling and creative writing.

You also will study English grammar in the context of TESOL, investigate adolescent language development and explore bilingual and multicultural education.

Areas of special expertise exist in the fields of second language learning, creative writing, children’s literature, sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, and psycholinguistics.

The program allows you to build on the solid foundation of your bachelor’s degree in language(s), linguistics, literature, anthropology or sociology, education, or a related area.

COURSE FEATURES

Objectives - Our core class is an integrated skills class. It covers reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. In this class you'll improve your accuracy (how correct your English is) and fluency (how well you can communicate). Lessons have daily and weekly objectives so you know what you’ll learn and how you’ll learn it. Our teachers provide you with regular assessments that allow you to keep track of your progress. We use the Communicative Approach, so you'll learn English by using English—not by listening to grammar lectures and doing worksheets. We feel strongly that this is the most effective method to acquire English that students can use in the real world. The Syllabus for each level is mapped to the CEFR levels A1-C2. The levels define what you can do and Stafford House believes that language is for communication. Each of our Core Class Course Books is also mapped to the CEFR providing a consistent basis for developing your language skills.
Flexibility - From Standard to Intensive and Super Intensive, our range of English language courses offers you a choice on how intensively you want to study - whether that’s 20 lessons a week on a Standard course or 30 lessons a week on our Super Intensive. Plus with our range of modules you get to personalise your course to fit your needs.
